How to Draw A Portrait

This page will eventually describe how to draw an amazing portrait. If you want to see how amazing, feel free to click the tab "Graphite Pencil Portraits" on the left. This is a technique that was tought to me by an Navaho Indian Eddie Lorado who draws just as amazing as I do. In answer to a recent request. How do I learn to draw?

Supplies

If you would like to learn to draw a portrait, you will need some supplies. Here are some simple items you will need to draw a good portrait.
1.) Ruler (Used for making a graph over the portrait you are going to draw, and under the paper you are going to draw on.)
2.) Typing paper. (You need paper that you can see through because you are going to draw over the top of the graph paper you will make.)
3.) Pencils. I reccomend getting the whole set of pencils from your local craft store. Pencils from 9h to 9b. (Ask at the store what 9h and 9b mean.) You want the whole range of them (but will probably only use 2 or 3.)
4.) Tortillions. A tortillion is a rolled up piece of paper that is rolled tightly so you can use the point of it (to smear pencil graphite with).
5.) Tape. Used to tape a piece of clean typing paper to your home made grid.
6.) Kneeded eraser.

How to draw a portrait.

1.) Decide on a portrait you would like to draw. (Make sure the face is at least as big as 2 thumbs put together.) 2.) Scan the portrait and convert it to black and white.
3.) Draw a grid over the b&w portrait using your ruler and pen. Use the ruler to measure how far you want the spacing of lines for your graph. Mark guidelines on all 4 sides of the page. Line up the ruler to them and use your pen to draw a line all the way across the page for each of your measurements. Your end product should be an even grid over the top of the portrait you want to draw.
4.) Draw a grid on a blank piece of paper. The size of the grid will either shrink or enlarge your origional photo. The smaller the grid you make, the small the final portrait will be.
5.) Place a blank piece of typing paper over the home made grid and tape the pages together with the masking tape.
6.) Use an 8b or 9b pencil and darken in a piece of scratch paper. You will dip your tortillion into this graphite and use it to draw with.
7.) Mark down the side of each graph (Both pages of graphs) numbers 1-whatever. 1 in the first square on the left 2 in the seccond, and so on. Do the same across the bottomb and the top. (I'll put some pics up soon!)
8.) Use your tortillion to draw an outline of your portraits head. Notice how the origional picture is gridded out for you. All you have to do is draw each square in the grid individually. So, lining the head... just follow where the outside line goes around the head.
9.) Draw each square individually. Basicly you put the dark markings where there are dark markings and light markings where there are light markings. You shouldn't have to use pencils much at all. Try to stay away from them as much as possible. Use your tortillion and your eraser to make each square in the grid darker or lighter. If you use a pencil it will become hard to erase a mistake. It will also scratch your page and degrade the quality you will be able to achieve.
